MetaLens started with a small, uncomfortable observation: the tools people use to check what their photos reveal often reveal those photos to someone else in the process. Upload your image, and it may be stored on a server, logged, or quietly retained. For a tool whose entire purpose is privacy — showing you the GPS coordinates and personal details buried in a file — that felt like exactly the wrong trade.
The principle: see everything, share nothing
So we built MetaLens around one rule. Your image is parsed only long enough to read its metadata, and it is never written to disk or kept afterwards. Nothing is logged, nothing is stored, and no third party receives your file. You get the full picture — format, dimensions, EXIF, GPS, XMP and IPTC — while your photo stays yours.
We took the same stance with the newer features. When you download a cleaned copy of an image with its metadata stripped, that work happens entirely in your browser. The file never leaves your device for that step at all.
Clarity over jargon
The second thing that bothered us was how opaque metadata is to most people. It is powerful — a single photo can disclose where you live, what you own, and when you were there — yet it is invisible by default and described in acronyms. We wanted MetaLens to translate: to show a coordinate as a point on a map, to lay out exposure settings you can actually learn from, and to back it all with plain-English guides rather than a specification.
Who it is for
Photographers reviewing their camera settings. Journalists and researchers verifying an image. And anyone who simply wants to know what they are about to share before they share it. If that is you, MetaLens is meant to make the invisible visible — and to keep it that simple.
