XMP stands for Extensible Metadata Platform. Adobe created it in 2001 as a flexible, XML-based way to store metadata inside — or alongside — a file. Where EXIF is a fixed set of camera fields, XMP is open-ended: software can define its own fields, which is why it has become the backbone of modern photo editing and asset management.
What XMP stores
Because it is extensible, XMP can hold almost anything, but you will commonly see:
- Edit history and settings — how a photo was processed in Lightroom or Camera Raw, including crops, exposure and color adjustments.
- Ratings and labels — the star ratings and color flags photographers use to sort a shoot.
- Keywords — descriptive tags that make large libraries searchable.
- Descriptions and titles — captions and headlines for an image.
- Rights and licensing — creator, copyright status and usage terms.
Sidecar files vs. embedded XMP
XMP can live in two places. It is often embedded directly inside JPEG, TIFF, PNG and other files. But for camera raw formats that should not be altered, editors write a separate sidecar file with a .xmp extension that sits next to the original. This lets you edit non-destructively — your adjustments live in the sidecar while the raw file stays untouched.
How XMP relates to EXIF and IPTC
These three standards overlap and often coexist in one file. A helpful way to think about it:
- EXIF — the camera's record of capture (settings, date, GPS).
- IPTC — descriptive and rights fields from the publishing world.
- XMP — a flexible wrapper that can carry IPTC-style data plus software-specific fields, all in one XML block.
In fact, modern tools frequently store IPTC information inside XMP, which is why you may see the same caption or copyright reported under both.
Why it matters to you
If you are a photographer, XMP is where your edits, keywords and copyright live — valuable data worth preserving. If you are sharing images and want to stay private, remember that XMP can carry your name in a creator or rights field, so a “clean” photo is only clean once XMP is checked too.
