GPS location in photos: how geotagging works

Modern phones can stamp the exact spot a photo was taken directly into the file. Here is how geotagging works, how to check whether your images carry it, and how to switch it off.

Geotagging is the process of attaching geographic coordinates to a photo. When your phone has location services enabled for the camera, it reads your position from GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell signals, then writes the latitude and longitude into the image's EXIF metadata. The result is a file that knows precisely where it was created — frequently within a few meters.

How a coordinate ends up in your photo

The location stored in EXIF uses the same latitude/longitude system as a mapping app. A pair of coordinates like 49.2827, -123.1207 pinpoints a single spot on Earth. Photos often store this in a degrees-minutes-seconds form along with a reference for hemisphere (N/S, E/W), plus an optional altitude. Software converts it back into a map pin — which is why your photo app can show your pictures on a map without any extra work from you.

How to tell whether a photo is geotagged

You cannot see geotagging by looking at the picture; it lives in the metadata. The fastest way to check is to upload the image to MetaLens. If the photo is geotagged, you will see a GPS entry with the coordinates and an embedded map showing the exact location. If there is no GPS section, the photo either never had location data or it has already been removed.

On your phone you can also open a photo's info panel: iPhone shows a small map beneath geotagged images, and Google Photos lists the location under the info button.

Turning geotagging off

iPhone

  1. Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.
  2. Scroll to Camera.
  3. Set it to Never (or Ask Next Time).

New photos will no longer be tagged. Existing photos keep whatever data they already have.

Android

  1. Open the Camera app and go to its settings (gear icon).
  2. Find Location tags, Save location, or Geotagging.
  3. Turn it off. You can also revoke location permission for the camera in system settings.

When geotagging is helpful — and when it is not

Location data is genuinely useful: it lets you retrace a trip, remember exactly where a photo was taken, and browse your library by place. For travel and landscape photography, many people happily leave it on.

The caution is about sharing. A geotagged photo of your home, your child's school, or a place you visit routinely can disclose a real-world location to anyone who receives the original file. The practical rule
